FAQ's
Who is eligible to submit cases and use the MEDxpertise® service?
Only licensed medical practitioners are eligible to submit cases and use the
system. Because the MEDxpertise® system is constructed to enhance local area
expertise, ordinarily cases route to/through the local pathologist.
Can I try out the service before I commit?
Yes, simply request a DxAuthor® Demo.
We will contact you to set up a conference call or a web-based demonstration.
Patient Privacy
What safeguards are in place to insure HIPAA patient privacy?
AMEDx maintains the confidentiality of all patient information in accordance
with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including the Healthcare
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). All data transmission
is encrypted and access to patient information is tightly restricted. All access
to patient data is tracked.
Who is allowed to review patient results and interpretive reports?
While in the AMEDx system, only registered physicians are allowed to view reports
and interpretations on their own patients. National experts will review cases
if requested by the local physician. The AMEDx professional services review panel
will occasionally review cases submitted for interpretation by local experts for
quality purposes.
Legal Issues
What documents are required to be on file in order to use the MEDxpertise® Service?
AMEDx requires a valid Medical License Number and proof of hospital privileges
to be enrolled in the service. Additionally, the physician must complete: a
MEDxpertise® Membership Application, agree to all Terms and Conditions,
and complete a HIPAA business associate agreement in compliance with regulation. If
you decide to become a local interpreter for your institution, one more agreement,
the DxAuthor® Software license agreement, must also be completed.
Who is liable for the correctness of the interpretive report?
Any information you receive from an AMEDx National Expert is believed to be
reliable. However, like any other consultation, it can only be provided on a
best efforts basis and is not guaranteed. The MEDxpertise® system facilitates
physician-to-physician consultation, and is not liable for any deficiencies
in the accuracy, completeness, availability or timeliness of information provided
by the diagnostic interpreter. Local interpreters bear full responsible for
interpretations they generate using the DxAuthor® software.
Is this service considered telemedicine?
AMEDx serves as an intermediary for clinical laboratory test interpretations
on a consultation basis initiated by a licensed physician or pathologist. AMEDx
does not practice medicine, and does not engage in any direct patient interaction.
AMEDx provides an exchange of information only.
Accessing National Experts
How does a local interpreter send a case to the national experts?
There is a simple button in the MEDxpertise® Software to send a case to the
national experts for review and consultation.
Reimbursement Issues
What amount of reimbursement can be expected when billing for interpretive report?
It varies by CPT code used and according to region, but for the most common
hemostasis-related codes the Medicare national reimbursement rate is in the
$20 range. Private payor rates are generally higher. Contact us for details.
Do I need to set up any special standing orders or requisition revisions to
implement the interpretive report as a medically necessity?
You will probably want to inform your medical executive committee of pathology's
desire to provide interpretive services for clinical lab results, much like
reports from surgical pathology. A standing order or check box where ordering
physicians can request the interpretive report will need to be added to your
requisition system.
Do you have any reference accounts we could speak to regarding billing and
successful payment under the proposed CPT codes?
Yes, AMEDx has several reference contacts from hospital systems that are successfully
billing and being paid for interpretive reports.
